Q. If you see a firefighter with Red Lights and Siren, what should I do?
A. Per Title 23, Chapter 13, Subchapter IV: Right-of-way of the Vermont Statues;
§ 1050. Operation on approach of law enforcement and emergency vehicles
(a) Upon the approach of a law enforcement vehicle which is sounding a siren or displaying a blue or blue and white signal lamp, or both, or upon the approach of an ambulance, fire apparatus, a vehicle operated by a volunteer firefighter, EMS personnel, or a motor vehicle used in rescue operations as set forth in section 1252 of this title which is sounding a siren or displaying a red signal lamp, or both, all other vehicles shall pull to the right of the lane of traffic and come to a complete stop, until the law enforcement or emergency vehicle has passed. However, an enforcement officer who is present shall have full power to regulate traffic irrespective of the foregoing provisions.

(b) The operator of a vehicle which is approaching a stationary law enforcement vehicle which is displaying a blue or blue and white signal lamp, or of a vehicle which is approaching a stationary ambulance, fire apparatus, a vehicle operated by a volunteer firefighter, or a motor vehicle used in rescue operations as set forth in section 1252 of this title which is displaying a red signal lamp or a stationary towing and repair vehicle displaying an amber signal lamp shall proceed with caution, and, if traveling on a four-lane highway, and safety conditions permit, make a lane change.

In short this means that if you see a vehicle with emergency lights running you need to pull over to the right and yield to them. Do this as safely as you can and remember, if you are at a red light and the emergency vehicles are coming up from behind you do NOT run the red light to get out of their way.

Q. What should I do if I come to a car accident?
A. If possible, pull over and call 911 on your cell phone. Try to give the 911 dispatcher as much information as you can (i.e. where the accident is, how many vehicles, are they blocking the road, or is anyone injured). If people are still in the vehicles that wrecked try to encourage them to stay in the vehicle and move as little as possible unless the vehicles are on fire. If any vehicles are on fire stay as far away as you can and try to get others to stay away too.

Q. What should I do if I drive passed a house that could be on fire?
A. If possible, pull over and call 911 on your cell phone. Try to give the 911 dispatcher as much information as you can (i.e. the address of the house, do you see just smoke or fire too, does anyone appear to still be in the house). Do not try to go in the house even if you think people are in there. You can't breathe smoke and you run the risk of becoming another victim. You can be most helpful by just giving the 911 dispatcher as much information as you can.

Q. What should I do if I see what looks like a fire in the woods.
A. If possible, pull over and call 911 on your cell phone. Try to give the 911 dispatcher as much information as you can (i.e. the nearest address to the fire, do you see just smoke or fire, or how big of an area appears to be on fire). Do not try to get closer to the fire, as brush fires can grow very quickly and without warning. You can be most helpful by just giving the 911 dispatcher as much information as you can.

Q. What should I do if power lines fall on top of my car and I'm in it?
A. Do NOT get out of your vehicle, even if you don't see any electricity sparking from the lines. If anyone tries to approach your vehicle try to warn them away. It is almost impossible to tell if a power line on your vehicle is charged or not.

Q. If I want to obtain a fire burn permit to burn a brush pile, how do I do this?
A. Unfortunately, there is no open burn permit available within the Village of Essex Junction.
